Application for Writing Matters or Voices and Choice

The Office of Instructional Technology is proud to announce its support of Teaching Matters’ web-based curricula and professional development series designed for middle schools. We have funded Teaching Matters to offer this three way matching opportunity to all our iTeach/iLearn schools. In order to qualify, please complete the following application and fax it to Teaching Matters at (212) 870-3516 or complete the application online at www.teachingmatters.org/apply. .

The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 9th at 5 PM. Confirmation will be made by Teaching Matters by November 14th, 2007.

Application
1. What literacy curriculum does your school currently implement? (If “Balanced Literacy”, please explain how your program works.)
We currently use Balanced Literacy in all of our classrooms. This gives us the opportunity to introduce our students to different genres through independent reading and writing.
2. What are the most common challenges in teaching writing/social studies in your school?
The social studies department embraces reading and writing in their classes, however, teachers still struggle with the constraints of completing the curriculum.

3. Briefly explain at least one way your school currently integrates technology with core instruction.

The ELA department has used the traditional toolsoftware programs to create and edit essays, paragraphs, stories and other student writings. They use the comment tool and the stylus to make corrections when they conference with students about their work. They also use wikispaces and blogs for students to display and save their work.

4. Please indicate school progress in achieving the professional development goals of the iTeach/iLearn initiative.
Our school has made significant progress in creating opportunities for teachers to attend as many trainings as possible in every content area. The content offered in each iTeach and iLearn professional development class enables the teacher to easily adapt its use in developing lessons and creative environments in the classrooms.
The teachers at I.S. 223 feel that the iTeach/iLearn professional development classes are relevant and useful. They always comment that the skills which they learn in the iTeach/ iLearn, and ongoing iTeach/iLearn professional development classes can be implemented and easily incorporated into their lessons.
The teachers have commented that the students are more engaged in the lessons and are taking the initiative to complete their assignments. As a result of the professional development classes the teachers feel they are better able to manage and focus on the curriculum. This enables the teachers also to keep the students on task, and at the same time, provide meaningful and diversified lessons.

      • NB: The full-day teacher institute is an essential feature of the program and your participation requires that teachers be available to attend. The Institute for Response to Literature will be held on November 29th at Teaching Matters. The Institute for Voices and Choices will be held on either January 9th or 10th.
